FODMAP stands for ‘fermentable oligo-, di-, and mono-saccharides and polyols.’ These types of sugars and fibers are abundant in foods such as apples, pears, wheat, garlic, yogurt, onions, and cashews. They’re highly fermentable, but poorly absorbed in the small intestine—which can lead to gas, diarrhea, or bloating in individuals with certain gastrointestinal disorders.
