The GoMacro Story: How was the company founded?
GoMacro was founded in 2004 on the GoMacro family farm. In 2003, GoMacro Co-Founder Amelia Kirchoff was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a lumpectomy, Amelia declined drug treatment and explored alternative options. Amelia and her daughter, GoMacro Co-Founder and CEO Jola Sonkin, embarked on a macrobiotic journey and together they gave up eating animal products, refined sugars and flours, processed foods, additives, artificial colorings and preservatives. After a year, Amelia’s health improved and she started adding healthy treats back into her diet. She couldn’t find anything on the market that she wanted to eat, so she began experimenting with different organic sweeteners, nuts, and other healthy ingredients and perfected the first GoMacro MacroBars
Does GoMacro still make THRIVE bars?
The THRIVE product line has been phased out in order to focus on the expanding MacroBar products. We are grateful for all of the support and love for this product, and look forward to the launch of exciting new MacroBar flavors in 2019!
What sweeteners are used in the MacroBars?
There are no refined sugars in the MacroBars. We use organic InfantSafe® brown rice syrup or organic coconut sugar of the highest grade, both of which contain essential nutrients. The chocolate chips and peanut butter chips that we use in some of the MacroBars and Thrive bars are also sweetened with organic coconut sugar.
What makes MacroBars macrobiotic?
- Focus on whole grains
- Simple, healthy nutrient-based ingredients
- Minimally processed
- Ingredient combinations to address individual needs
Why is brown rice syrup listed as the first ingredient on some of the bars?
By law, ingredient lists have to be listed in order of weight. Brown rice syrup is very dense, and it weighs more than the other ingredients that we use. As a result, it comes up first on the list. (For example, 1/2 cup of brown rice syrup weighs the same as 2 cups of oats. Even though we are using more oats, brown rice syrup has to be listed first due to its weight.) MacroBars are actually not as sweet as other bars on the market. The reason you often do not see the sweetener first on other bar ingredient lists is because they are using multiple sweeteners. If you were to put all the sweeteners together into a blend, it would most likely come first in their ingredient list as well.
What are the health benefits of brown rice syrup?
Brown rice syrup contains complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. The sugar profile in brown rice syrup is 21% maltotriose (a complex carbohydrate), 45% maltose (a complex carbohydrate), and 10% glucose (a simple carbohydrate). The glucose is immediately absorbed and metabolized, maltose takes from an hour to an hour and a half, and maltotriose take 2-3 hours to be metabolized. This slow metabolism releases a constant, steady supply of energy over a longer period of time.
Brown rice is a good source of minerals, which are carried over to its by-products like brown rice syrup.
Our InfantSafe® brown rice syrup contains micronutrients:
- Potassium: Potassium, along with low amounts of sodium, helps to maintain blood pressure and reduces water retention.
- Iron: Iron assists in respiration at the cellular level by aiding in the synthesis of hemoglobin that helps to carry oxygen to cells.
- Calcium: Calcium not only aids in bone health, but also plays a crucial role in muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and the maintenance of pH balance in the body.
- Sodium: Sodium is a key electrolyte in maintaining blood pressure, muscle contraction, and nerve conduction.
What is InfantSafe® brown rice syrup?
The InfantSafe® organic brown rice syrup we use is put through a proprietary process that removes heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and mercury, to levels undetectable by conventional methods, without affecting the other nutrients. All of our brown rice syrup is verified to contain less than 10 ppb of for arsenic and lead, below the FDA standard for drinking water.
Why do MacroBars have more carbs and sugar than other bars?
MacroBars are larger than most of our competitors so it appears that we have more carbs and sugar but in actuality they are about the same. All the carbs and sugars we use come from healthy ingredients and are slow-burning. Our sweeteners take longer to digest, thus avoiding the blood-sugar spikes associated with refined sugars. The fats in MacroBars are healthy fats derived from nuts and seeds containing omega-3 fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. Carbs are complex carbs from whole grains. These are slow-burning carbs that boost energy levels throughout the day.
Where do you get your gluten-free oats from?
We buy our oats from La Crosse Milling Company in nearby Cochrane, WI. We like to source our ingredients locally whenever possible. This is an important part of our mission to source sustainably and reduce pollution.
What does Gluten-Free Certified mean?
A gluten-free certification means that MacroBars contain less than 10 parts per million of gluten. In comparison, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s gluten-free label rules call for foods to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten. All MacroBars and all incoming ingredients are also tested for gluten on a regular basis.

The shelf life of MacroBars is eight months from the time of manufacture, but can be refrigerated or put in the freezer to extend the shelf life. All MacroBars are made fresh to order.
Are MacroBars low-glycemic?
MacroBars are not low-glycemic. However, by sweetening with InfantSafe® brown rice syrup and infusing high-protein and high-fiber ingredients, MacroBars take advantage of nature’s complex sugars, which take longer to digest. We have had doctors tell us that they recommend the MacroBars to diabetic patients for times when they experience low blood sugar reactions.
What is Sustained Energy?
Sustained energy is the release of energy over a long period of time. Our bodies get the energy they need by converting food into fuel. This metabolism of energy works most efficiently when our diet contains complex carbs, sugars and healthy fats. Simple sugars can cause blood sugar spikes while MacroBars containing complex carbs and sugars release sustaining energy over a period of several hours.

Are MacroBars safe for those with nut allergies?
Our nut-free bars are manufactured on equipment that is taken apart and thoroughly cleaned at the end of each day, but we do use peanuts, walnuts, cashews and coconuts at our facility. We, therefore, do not recommend our bars for those with severe nut allergies. That being said, we do offer three MacroBar nut-free flavors:
- Sunflower Butter + Chocolate
- Oatmeal + Chocolate Chip
- Maple Sea Salt

GoMacro currently does not ship direct to consumers outside of the United States.
Are GoMacro products considered Paleo?
Defining whether a product is Paleo friendly or not has always been a discussion rather than a definition. According to the Paleo Diet website, they recommend reducing consumption of peanuts and cereal grains like rice and oats. Since we commonly use these ingredients across our entire product portfolio we don’t recommend any GoMacro products for those consumers that are following the Paleo diet
