Position: Quality Supervisor

Reports To: Laboratory Manager

Purpose:  Ensures consistent quality and food safety of finished products and ingredients. Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Quality Supervisor assists with implementing and maintaining food safety programs, procedures, polices, and specifications. Develops and sustains close working relationships with other department managers and supervisory personnel to identify, solve, and prevent problems affecting quality and food safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 The list is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Supervise testing that involves finished products, ingredients, and packaging
    • Determine appropriate hold/release pending testing results
  • Release the finished product for shipment - preparation of all certificates of analysis
  • Manage product and ingredient sampling and associated retain programs
  • Ensure quality technicians are in compliance with laboratory procedures
    • Create, review, and update laboratory WINs
    • Train on WINs and keep up to date training records
  • Purchase, monitor and maintain lab equipment and its calibration
    • Troubleshoot equipment as necessary
  • Develop and/or adapt quality equipment to meet quality control standards
    • Make suggestions as needed to improve associated quality procedures, standards, and equipment to facilitate work and sustain quality
  • Supervise and direct quality technicians who are responsible for enforcing Good Manufacturing Practices and other food safety and quality-related programs by mentoring, training, setting expectations, providing accountability, and performing evaluations
  • Review quality documentation to verify compliance and accurate record keeping
    • Address non-conformances
  • Evaluate foreign materials and communicate with suppliers accordingly
  • Monitor insect and pest activity in coordination with pest control service providers to identify and resolve problems
  • Verify weekly timesheets and track attendance
    • Provide disciplinary action when necessary
  • Apply key performance indicators as needed
  • Assist with initiatives to meet approved continuous improvement goals
  • Maintain a fair and professional work environment that focuses on business objectives
  • Monitor and order inventory as needed
  • Take all necessary actions to maintain the certification and compliance of the plant, laboratory, testing equipment and laboratory technicians as needed
  • Participate in customer and regulatory agency visits and audits
    • Accompany visitors and accommodate requests as appropriate - maintain subsequent RCA and CAPA
  • Oversee and coordinate activities of the environmental monitoring programs in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Act as a technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems regarding production or quality, and assist employees in problem solving techniques
  • Evaluate processes and methods; recommend measures to improve quality of product, equipment performance, and utilization of people as appropriate
  • Provide back-up support for Lab Manager and quality technicians as workload or absences require

Skills & Qualifications:

  • BS degree in related field or 3-5 years of experience in supervisory role in manufacturing
  • HACCP certified
  • PCQI*
  • SQF Practitioner*
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven success supervising teams
  • Ability to coach, motivate, and direct employees
  • Skill in organization and prioritization with attention to detail
    • Delegate where appropriate
  • Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Time management
  • Able to adapt to changing operational needs and lead others through change
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Represent a strong team member and leader with the ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Must have punctuality and good attendance
  • Demonstrate initiative
  • Ability to flex and adjust working hours to manage responsibilities on all shifts.
