Becoming Part of the Big Picture Today, when many people in the world are starving we need to do more. GoMacro is part of a bigger picture and "going macro" means being cognizant of and participating in that bigger picture. Macrobiotics has always promoted a diet and lifestyle that enhances health. By eating locally when possible and eating organic, minimally processed foods, we have focused on the healing aspects of foods. Today we must focus also on healing the planet. We need to eat in a way that provides us with nutritious meals but doesn't adversely affect clean air and clean water for all of mankind. It is interesting that in poorer nations illness is a result of want; in developed countries illness is a result of excess. Macrobiotics is a way of eating that maintains health without creating shortages in our food supply. Over thousands of years, nature has developed, through a natural evolutionary process, hundreds of varieties of nutritionally superior native grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. These varieties are naturally suited to the climates in which they evolved. Many of these varieties have been lost in recent centuries, through colonization and a process of forcing indigenous cultures to give up their traditional foods and replace them with 'modern' crops. This loss of biodiversity has hurt ecosystems throughout the world, and the challenge for the macrobiotic movement today is to help restore this diversity so that we can once again have healthy soil, healthy oceans and a healthy climate. To maintain that health we need to start with a healthy soil. Early in the 20th century a soil scientist by the name of Albert Howard wrote a book called "Soil & Health". He discovered and confirmed through his studies of the forest floor the disease-resisting power of natural living soil. Living soil contains organic matter and animal protein. Plants cultivated in such soil are disease resistant. Animals feeding upon plants grown in living soil are not as susceptible to infectious diseases. They do not need constant doses of antibiotics. When we eat food that has been grown in soils free of fertilizers and pesticides we will have a stronger immune system and a natural resistance to diseases of all kinds. What You Can Do When you shop for food you need to ask questions and you need to find out where and how your ingredients are grown. You need to support organizations that promote sustainable agriculture, by eating local foods and supporting the communities in which you live. Sometimes you have to buy food grown in other parts of the world. When you do so, make sure that those foods are free of pesticides and that a fair wage is paid to the farmers. Let's all make sure that our lifestyle does not endanger the health of our planet. We at GoMacro feel privileged to have an opportunity to support this restoration......to be an integral part of the Big Picture. |
