News on health. Interesting research out of Australia suggests that while both low-fat/high carb diets and high fat/low carb diets can be effective in helping people to lose weight, people who eat more carbs tend to be in a better mood - “less angry, depressed and confused after one year than those who ate fewer carbs.”
This highlights the fact that we cannot expect to lose weight by focusing on extremes. We need healthy fats from nuts and seeds in our diet. We also need to eat complex carbs especially slow burning carbs from grains. These provide energy and prevent mood swings.
In October of this year, we sponsored the Michigan University Solar Car team in the World Solar Challenge in October. The annual race across Australia from Darwin in the Northern Territory to Adelaide drew college teams from across the globe. The team finished third and we think that is pretty good. Here is the update we just received from them.
Thanks so much! Our Third place this year equals the Team's best
achievements in 1993, 2001, and 2005. What made this year unique was that
we were extremely close to being second and were unlucky not to do so. In
the end we were a little disappointed that we couldn't set ourselves apart as
the best Michigan Team ever, but we are still proud of our immense
achievement! The race itself was very exciting: we were neck and neck with
a team from the Netherlands, passing each other a dozen times!
Now, I could go on and on about the race tactics and strategy, but let me
first give you my thanks and appreciation for your generous contribution to
our success. Your Go Macro bars made life so much easier for us, especially
our Operations Division. We would have loved to have more but I don't think
we could have carried any more bars in our check-in luggage!
Every day the race was so draining. Our Operations division would have
to set up military grade shelters in the scorching sun at the end of each
day. After that they would have to cook dinner and then begin the mundane
task of preparing lunch for the next day, which, thanks to the Go Macro
bars was just tossing them into the Goody Bags. They considerably lightened
the workload for our Operations Division
Happy Thanksgiving
We have also received a couple of updates from an internet cafe in the Amazon rain forest. We are providing MacroBars to the researchers of the Andes to Amazon Biodiversity Program on their expedition to the Quince Mil region in the Andes. They should be back in a few weeks and we will be posting pictures. In the meantime here is the news we have so far.
..........quince mil is VERY remote and right in the jungle. i woke up to see
a pile of orchids that were collected yesterday..lady slipper and others...
sunday we will all go to Puno near lake titicaca to look for rare orchids...that
have hardly ever been collected there so most are new to science. going to
send this before it cuts out again......
........tried to write this morning but power cut off...we got back from puno
yesterday...we found about 30 species of orchids in the 3 days of collecting
and driving down the road they are making, very rough in most parts at the
moment, but we got past the landslide that stopped eric and john a few weeks
ago... most of the orchids we found had never been collected in this part of
peru yet, mainly because it has been so hard to get to.. we also drove up to
about 1200 feet altho whole way is mountains and saw incredible inca like
modern terraced agriculture but incredibly few people or houses at the same
time... and we found a huge south american lady slipper that i was able to
draw by very bad light, but can paint later
.......hopefully there won´t be too many road blocks... lots of rain every night
but not too much in the day..we set up an insect trap last night and saw
huge furry moths i need to draw...and took a swim in a creek up the mountain
a bit and drew a lady slipper orchid and a giant pod that has seed inside
covered with fluffy cotton candy stuff......... a guy studying bears came down
from a village in the highlands where local people were helping him set up
camera traps for the spectaled bear that is very elusive, and no one know
much about their behavior..........
That's all the news for now.
