The North American Odyssey

Earth Day (April 22, 2010) is the start of the North American Odyssey. Wilderness Classroom founder Dave Freeman and Amy Voytilla will navigate over 11,000 miles of North America’s lakes, rivers, and coastlines by canoe, kayak, and dogsled in three years.

Together with teachers and students from the Chicago area they will kayak 1,400 miles from Seattle, Washington to Skagway, Alaska. The team will progress over the Klondike Gold Rush history-studded mountains, to the home of Inuit people along the Arctic Ocean. From there they will dogsled and canoe south through central Canada, kayak across the Great Lakes, then follow the annual whale migration past the salt marshes and sea turtles of the Atlantic Coast, finishing the adventure in the mangroves and coral reefs of the Florida Keys. Through daily online communication, students throughout the country will learn about wilderness travel and develop an appreciation for the environment as teachers integrate the expedition into their existing curriculum.

Amy has been field testing our Macrobars. She said, "We had some -20 nights, so I let a bar freeze and was amazed that it never got too solid to chew."

We will be sending along Macrobars throughout the expedition and we hope to update our blog on a regular basis with some exciting photos.

The Macro Cruise

The Holiday at Sea Cruise also known as the macro cruise will have our MacroBars on board. From March 21st - 28th, this cruise will bring together the world's leading authorities and experts in holistic living and natural health. Guests will cruise the Caribbean on the Costa Fortuna, dine on organic natuiral foods prepared by well known chefs, visit exotic ports. and choose from a variety of classes on every aspect of healthy living.

We have heard great things from many people that have gone on this cruise. It is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, and get lots of new ideas to improve your health.

2010 Eagle HiWheel Bicycle Mayors' Ride

Martin Kreig is incorporating our MacroTreats and MacroBars into his diet as he rides his 1891 Eagle bike in the annual Mayor's ride. After suffering paralysis and a coma as the result of injuries from a car accident, he has crossed the country twice on a bike; written a book about his experiences and is working hard to build the National Bicycle Greenway, an interconnected network of safe bikeable roads and paths.

The diet that he will be following was designed for his ride by nutritionist, Johanna Thorn, N.C. It is definitely worth checking out since it includes many macrobiotic and vegan foods. It does include some non vegan food items but can be easily adapted to a vegan lifestyle.

Bark for Life

We have two dogs, Eric, a white German Shepherd and Tasha, a Border Collie, and we love dogs, so we are really happy to be able to provide free MacroBars to everybody attending the American Cancer Society's Bark for Life, a non-competitive dog walk for dogs and their owners to fight cancer together in New York City.

This year, the New York City event will be celebrating its 19th anniversary of "barking" to fight cancer so if you live in New York City do come on Sunday, May 2nd at 9: a.m. at Riverside Park.

The Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary Race

The Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is one of our favorite organizations so, we will again be providing MacroBars to all the race participants. The race will be held on Sunday, May 23rd in Wheaton Regional Park in Wheaton, Maryland.

This is a wonderful sanctuary dedicated to providing a home for neglected and unwanted farm animals so please visit their website and provide your support.
