B12 Deficiency
May
16

Many people who do not eat any animal products are worried about a B12 deficiency. The recommended daily requirement for B12 is very low, approximately 2.4 micrograms per day. You should try to get about 10 micrograms per day or about 2,000 micrograms per week if you are taking supplements. Since B12 is stored in the liver, kidneys and muscle tissue you do not need to take B12 every day. A B12 deficiency actually takes many years to develop and it is rare to see a deficiency in someone on a vegan diet.

Why are nightshade vegetables forbidden in the macrobiotic diet
May
01

A few days ago somebody commented that they could never go on a macro diet because the nightshade vegetables are forbidden. For those who don't know, nightshades come from the family Solanaceae and include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and potatoes. These are for many of us some of our most popular vegetables. We certainly do not remember that there was a time when they were considered poisonous and only grown as ornamentals. All nightshade vegetables contain solanine, a nicotine compound.

Eat Mesquite
Oct

We are always on the lookout for new, interesting ingredients for our products and we used mesquite in two of our MacroNutrient Bars; the Cashew Mesquite and the Chocolate Crunch. The mesquite that we use is ground from the seed pods of the mesquite plant, found in many arid areas including the Southwest. It's extensive root system can fix nitrogen, helping to enrich desert soils and in a drought it will shed its leaves to conserve moisture.
